Being able to recognize sight words is crucial to reading success. When students spend too much time trying to sound out words that are not spelled phonetically, they are taking away their energy from decoding the words that can be sounded out. For our purposes, we classify a sight word as a word that occurs frequently in the English language, but cannot be sounded out.

We use many strategies to teach sight words, but one of our new favorite techniques is through our sight word flip books. These books contain ten sight words each and students must flip the letters to spell each sight word. They are great for centers or individual work.
